English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) and D&T

Many members have been lobbying their MPs about the effect of the English Baccalaureate on Design and Technology, sometimes with very little response. However Martin Chandler was lucky enopugh to receive feedback from both his MP Ian Duncan Smith and from the communications office at the DfE. Both make interesting reading and are attached.
Today (31st January 2013) there has been a lot in the news about internal unrest about the Ebacc. It will be interesting to watc tis debate unfold.

Secondary Core Health and Safety Accreditation

Course details: This nationally accredited 1-day practical course will prepare teachers, technicians and support staff in Design and Technology Departments to meet the requirements of the TDA/D&TA 'Health and Safety Training Standards in Design and Technology' and BS4163: 2007 'Health and safety for design and technology in schools and similar establishments'.

This course will provide ?refresher training? on two of the Specialist Extension Levels, i.e. S1HS - WOOD SAWING MACHINES and S8HS - PLANER/THICKNESSER MACHINES.

Please note - this 'refresher' course is suitable for staff who already hold certification on this range of machines, but whose certification is now over 5 years old. Courses for those staff who require ?initial? training is advertised separately. Course members will undertake a variety of practical exercises during the day. Machines covered will include the circular saw, narrow band saw, compound mitre saw, fretsaw and the combined planer-thicknesser. Course members will receive a course pack covering current legislation and the knowledge, skills and understanding required to safely use this range of woodworking machinery in schools.

Course members who have recently completed the TDA/D&TA 'Core' Level Training, and have submitted their portfolio of evidence for accreditation, will be able to add these 2 course units to their D&TA accreditation.

Cost of training:£300.00 per person including resources and Free Memory stick with useful resources on. Refreshments also provided.
25.00 per head for new accreditation and £10.00 per head for additional awards.

You will then , make a few different items with fabric to take away with you. Schemes of work will be discussed and shown as well as how you can expand on this and turn it into an excellent fundraiser for your school.

Course details: This national, newly-accredited course will prepare teachers and Primary D&T subject co-ordinators to meet the requirements of the TDA/D&TA Health and Safety Training Standards in Design and Technology - Primary Level Training Standards.

During the course, participants will develop their knowledge and understanding of the
Primary Standards, which includes:

- Developing a culture of health and safety
- Risk assessment processes
- General health and safety awareness

Course members will also learn how to develop a D&T health and safety portfolio as a personal record of their health and safety training and working practice in school. This being a pre-requisite for accreditation by the Design and Technology Association. The sessions will provide the basis of design and technology
CPD with colleagues on return to school.?

This course fulfils OFSTED's 'safeguarding' criteria.
To be renewed every 5 years.

Primary Food Curriculum

PRIMARY Food curriculum
Date: 25th April 2012
Title of course: Primary Food and Food safety Level 2
Times: 9am to 4pm

Course details: This one day practical course is aimed at primary teachers who teach food elements in their curriculum, or after school clubs. It is suitable for teachers, HLTS's and D&T coordinators.

It will provide staff with an excellent opportunity to enhance and develop their knowledge, skills and understanding about food and cooking for the primary curriculum, specifically it will:
- increase teachers? confidence through a practical session,
- raise awareness of Health and Safety in teaching about food and nutrition;
- develop a supportive network between schools concerning food issues.
- provide teachers with a recognised Food Safety Level 2 qualification.

The day is broken down into the following two sessions:

1. Four hours spent on completion of the guided learning and exam. Note: an additional two hours of guided learning is required to be completed as pre-work using the Awarding Body's 'Question and Answer' book alongside the Food Safety handbook. (6 hours guided learning in total).
2. A hands-on practical session, using ingredients and relevant resources for KS2. Here, delegates will learn good practice, safe food preparation, recipe selection, safe use of equipment and discuss preparation of risk assessments.
This course fulfils OFSTED's 'safeguarding' criteria.

Cost of training: £250.00 per person including Food Safety level 2 delegate handbook and work book, exam and certificate, ingredients, resources to make a successful day that you can take away with you.
